Building Relationships

Last week, we came together as a faculty to grow and to plan for this year. We discussed curriculum integration, next steps in our DEI work, thematic learning, math fluency, and so much more. Throughout the week, however, we returned again and again to the humanity of our work, knowing that none of the above can take place without this crucial element. To quote Jim Comer “No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.”

How do we build those relationships? First, we all deeply care for and appreciate children. Teaching is by no means an easy profession. We are here because of the kids, their curiosity, their playfulness, and their struggles. We create safe environments where each and every student can, and is expected to, bring their authentic self. We hold morning meetings, closing meetings, and Community of Caring to allow each student to share their voice. We listen. We want to get to know each student as the person they are en route to the person they are becoming.

This week, we also began the process of building a partnership with you, our families. We want to know your hopes and dreams for your child, we want to learn more about your family, and we want to forge a trusting collaboration. To misquote Humphrey Bogart at the end of Casablanca, “This is the start of a beautiful relationship.”
