The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has announced plans to conduct a Bike & Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on May 3, 2024, with a focus on reducing collisions between motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The operation aims to address violations that commonly lead to accidents involving these road users.

According to the SMPD, officers will be deployed to locations with high rates of pedestrian and bike collisions to enforce traffic laws and promote safety. The enforcement efforts will target violations such as speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield to pedestrians or bicyclists, and disregarding traffic signs and signals.

In a statement, pedestrians were reminded to prioritize safety by using crosswalks, being cautious of approaching vehicles, and ensuring they are visible to drivers, especially in low-light conditions. Drivers were advised to adhere to speed limits, yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, and never drive while impaired. Bicyclists were encouraged to obey traffic laws, use lights and helmets, and stay clear of the "door zone" near parked cars.

"We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car. Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another," said a spokesperson for the Pedestrians.

The SMPD's safety operation will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on May 3, 2024, in an effort to enhance road safety and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities among pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
