SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPARTMENT: The Santa Monica Police & Fire Departments will Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9/11

Santa Monica Police Department issued the following announcement on Sept. 1.

Saturday, September 11 marks 20 years since the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and Shanksville, PA. 2,977 perished that day. Of those killed, 343 were FDNY Firefighters and 71 were Law Enforcement Officers. In the past 20 years, that number has grown significantly from Ground Zero exposures and related diseases contracted from the months of working “The Pile”.

In recognition of those who perished on that tragic day, SMPD and SMFD will conduct a brief and solemn remembrance ceremony consistent with the International Association of Fire Chief’s recommended protocols. The public is invited to attend or watch the live stream on the Santa Monica Fire Department (www.facebook.com/santamonicafd, www.facebook/santamonicapd) and City’ of Santa Monica’s (www.facebook.com/cityofsantamonica) Facebook accounts.

In person attendance: The ceremony will follow LA County Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 protocols. Please do not attend if you have been exposed to or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Unvaccinated persons are strongly recommended to wear a mask during the event. All persons are required to wear a mask when indoors.

Time: Saturday, September 11, 8:00 a.m.

Location: Fire Station 1, 1337 7th Street

0805: Interim Chief Wolfgang Knabe, Santa Monica Fire Department: Welcome and opening

0810: Santa Monica Police Remarks  

0815: Mayor Sue Himmelrich Remarks

0820: Santa Monica Fire Department Chaplain will provide a prayer and ask for one minute of silence for 9/11 victims.

0825: Santa Monica Fire Department Honor Guard Commander will give brief history of the Bell Ringing Ceremony
