Michael Beckerman, a distinguished musicologist recognized for his work on Czech and Eastern European music, has been named the new dean of UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music. Beckerman, who currently holds prominent positions at New York University, will commence his role at UCLA by October 1.
Previously, Beckerman was a faculty member at UC Santa Barbara and held academic positions at Lancaster University in the UK and Washington University in St. Louis. He expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the University of California: “Returning to the University of California after 25 years is really a dream come true,” he stated.
Beckerman's scholarship encompasses ethnomusicology, composition, and performance. His works include titles like “New Worlds of Dvořák” and “Classical Music: Contemporary Perspectives and Challenges.” He has lectured globally on topics ranging from classical composers to music in World War II concentration camps. Additionally, he is an accomplished writer and commentator, having contributed to the New York Times and the PBS series “Live From Lincoln Center.”
His accolades include the Dvořák Medal, the Janáček Medal, and the Gratias Agit Award from the Czech government, alongside the Harrison Medal from Ireland’s Society of Musicology. Beckerman holds academic degrees from Hofstra University and Columbia University.
Beckerman emphasized his commitment to teaching and collaboration at UCLA: “Nothing makes me happier than the success of my students and colleagues.” Darnell Hunt, UCLA’s executive vice chancellor and provost, praised Beckerman's qualifications to lead the school forward: “Professor Beckerman’s academic, professional and administrative experience and achievements, coupled with his UC roots, position him well to lead the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music at this pivotal moment.”
Beckerman will take over from Eileen Strempel, who has served as dean since 2019. In the interim, Robert Fink will assume the role until Beckerman's arrival in the fall.
