Actress Elizabeth Chambers has criticized the city of Los Angeles for its handling of recent wildfires, attributing the devastation to mismanagement by elected officials in California. Her comments were made during an interview with Fox News on January 18.
According to Fox News, Chambers said that Los Angeles failed to adequately prevent and manage the wildfires that ravaged parts of California. She described the situation as a "total disaster" and attributed it to unpreparedness and mismanagement by state officials. Chambers noted that the scale of the fires was unforeseen.
The Hill reported that instead of addressing imminent natural disasters, California government officials focused on other priorities, such as "Trump-proofing" the state. They allegedly ignored warnings from wildfire professionals and redirected funds away from disaster relief efforts.
Cal Fire has reported that the Palisades and Eaton Fires began on January 7 and are currently 77% and 95% contained, respectively. As of January 24, the Palisades Fire has burned 23,448 acres, destroyed 6,809 structures, damaged 904 structures, and resulted in 11 deaths. The Eaton Fire has burned 14,021 acres, destroyed 9,418 structures, damaged 1,073 structures, and caused 17 deaths. Santa Ana winds and drought conditions exacerbated by heavy brush from previous years' rains have worsened these fires. Investigations into their causes are ongoing.
