In honor of Earth Week, Santa Monica is set to welcome two new microforests, described as "fast-growing, low maintenance, tiny preserves that mimic natural woodlands." The initiative is made possible through a collaboration involving the Malibu Foundation, Santa Monica College (SMC), and the city itself.
The microforests, which are designed to capture stormwater, mitigate heat, sequester carbon, and improve biodiversity, are part of a sustainable effort to restore nature in urban areas. The partnership has brought these innovative ecosystems to life within the city, marking a significant step towards environmental conservation.
According to reports, SMC unveiled the first microforest planted at a community college in the country, showcasing a commitment to advancing green initiatives within educational institutions. Additionally, the microforest at SMC will serve as a platform for research, offering valuable experience to biology students who will study its growth and ecosystem.
As one of the speakers highlighted, "SMC’s microforest will provide research experience to SMC biology students, who will evaluate the microforest’s growth, observe the effects of microbes in the soil, and see what insect and animal life the microforest attracts."
The project represents a unique opportunity for the community to engage with nature and learn about the benefits of microforests. Santa Monica residents are encouraged to participate in the planting of the country’s first median microforest at the Olympic Boulevard median, further demonstrating the city's dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
