SANTA MONICA, Calif. (March 15, 2024) — The city of Santa Monica has announced its plans to develop a citywide action plan aimed at enhancing services for older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers. This initiative is made possible through a $200,000 grant from the California Department of Aging Local Aging & Disability Action Planning (LADAP) program.
Heather Averick, the Housing & Human Services Director, expressed the importance of this endeavor, stating, "By creating Santa Monica’s Local Aging & Disability Action Plan, we’ll ensure that we care for our most vulnerable residents and provide them the services they need to thrive in our city."
The grant will enable the city to commence the planning process for a local age-and disability-friendly action plan that addresses the current, emerging, and future needs of Santa Monica's older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. This initiative aligns with the city's strategic priority of Justice, Equity & Diversity.
To facilitate the development of the action plan, the city is seeking proposals from experts who will collaborate with city staff, nonprofit partners, city commissioners, and other stakeholders. Community engagement opportunities will also be provided throughout the planning process. A draft plan is expected to be presented to the City Council for discussion in early 2025.
The LADAP grant falls under California’s Master Plan for Aging, a comprehensive strategy designed to prepare the state for demographic changes and uphold principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The city of Santa Monica's commitment to supporting its vulnerable residents reflects a broader statewide effort towards a more inclusive and supportive community.
