The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has announced a Bike & Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation scheduled for March 7th and 8th, 2024. According to the department, the operation will focus on primary collision factors involving motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists in an effort to reduce deaths and injuries on the road.
"We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car. Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another," emphasized by Pedestrians.
During the enforcement operation, traffic officers will be patrolling areas where bike and pedestrian collisions are common. They will be on the lookout for violations committed by drivers, bike riders, and pedestrians that could lead to life-changing injuries. Violations such as speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to bicyclists or pedestrians, and disregarding traffic signs and signals will be targeted.
Pedestrians are advised to be predictable, use crosswalks when available, take notice of approaching vehicles, and be visible by wearing light colors and reflective materials, especially during low-light conditions. Drivers are reminded to follow speed limits, yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, and never drive impaired. Bicyclists are urged to obey traffic laws, use hand signals, have proper lighting at night, and wear helmets.
The SMPD's extra enforcement efforts will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the specified dates. The initiative aims to create a safer environment for all road users by promoting awareness and adherence to traffic laws and safety measures.
