Santa Monica Police Department issued the following announcement on May 14.
The US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration along with SMPD want to remind all motorists that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. As May approaches with warmer temperatures, the unofficial start of the summer is upon us. Safe riding and driving practices, and cooperation from all those on the road, will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our roadways.
SMPD officers will be conducting safety operations every weekend through Memorial Day starting TODAY!
Research shows that one of the primary contributing factors to motorcyclist fatalities is speeding. Alcohol impairment also plays a significant role.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Observe all traffic laws
Obey the speed limit
Avoid distractions
