California State Assembly District 54 recently issued the following announcement.
Assemblymember Kamlager (D-Los Angeles) introduced legislation to protect and expand the Baldwin Hills Conservancy. Assembly Bill 2000, the Baldwin Hills and Urban Watersheds Conservancy Act, expands the boundaries to include the Southern Ballona Creek Watershed and Upper Dominguez Channel area, changes the name to the Baldwin Hills and Urban Watersheds Conservancy and repeals the January 1, 2026 sunset date.
“The Baldwin Hills Conservancy serves diverse communities in my district and beyond, which is in one of the most urbanized areas in the country. We must protect this agency that addresses climate impacts and improves quality of life by increasing access to nature, cleaning our water and engaging communities directly,” said Assemblymember Kamlager.
The bill will continue and expand the work of conserving the Baldwin Hills Parklands, restoring native habitat, capturing and filtering water, empowering youth to be open space stewards, and promoting community health through access to natural spaces.
“Expanding the Baldwin Hills Conservancy would provide additional resources for communities that have faced historic disinvestment. The Conservancy would be able to serve a larger area and invest in parks and open space in areas of high need, which is clear in both the LA County Park Needs Assessment and the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool,” said Jill Sourial, Urban Conservation Program Director for The Nature Conservancy in Los Angeles.
The Baldwin Hills Conservancy’s mission is to acquire open space and manage public lands within the Baldwin Hills area and to provide recreation, restoration and protection of wildlife habitat within the territory for the public’s enjoyment and educational experience. The Conservancy provides Local Assistance funding to public agencies and non-profits to restore and improve the territory pursuant to this mission. Funding for these grants comes from Prop 1, Prop 40 and Prop 84.
