The UCLA women’s tennis team secured a narrow victory against Vanderbilt in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The match, held at Lummis Tennis Center in Nashville, ended 4-3 in favor of UCLA. This win allows UCLA to advance to the Super Regionals where they will face Texas A&M.

The decisive moment came when Ahmani Guichard faced Sophia Webster on Court 5. After splitting sets, Guichard was down 5-3 in the third set but managed to recover and push it to a tiebreaker. Despite being two points away from defeat, she won four consecutive points to clinch her victory with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).

“Just a super competitive match,” said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. “Vanderbilt has had a great season. We knew going in that it was just going to come down to points and it came down to the last match and a tiebreaker in the third.”

Guichard’s performance was complemented by Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle. The duo started strong by defeating Celia-Belle Mohr and Webster at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-3. Wagle then defeated Bridget Stammel in straight sets on court No. 3, while Hance made a comeback against Valeria Ray for another singles win.

Hance and Wagle’s contributions were vital according to Sampras Webster: “Kimmi (Hance) and Elise (Wagle), our seniors who have been so solid this year, they really kept us in it.”

UCLA’s doubles point was secured by Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer’s win at Court 3 doubles with a score of 7-5.
