The UCLA women’s tennis team secured a spot in the NCAA Championship super-regional round after defeating Arizona State 4-3 in Tempe on May 2. Ahmani Guichard clinched the victory for UCLA by winning the final singles match in three sets at Whiteman Tennis Center.
This result is significant as it marks the second consecutive day that UCLA has won a tightly contested match, keeping their postseason run alive. The Bruins previously overcame San Diego State, with Olivia Center delivering the deciding point in Friday’s first-round contest.
According to the university’s announcement, “Guichard was the last player standing, prevailing in three sets.” The statement also noted that Guichard played a similar role last year when she delivered another decisive victory to send UCLA to the super regionals. In this latest match, Guichard defeated Zlata Bartanusz 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on Court 6.
UCLA began doubles play strongly with Mayu Crossley and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer winning their match 6-0. Olivia Center and Kate Fakih then secured another doubles win with a score of 6-4. In singles play, Crossley and Center both posted straight-set victories for UCLA. The overall contest remained close as Arizona State answered back with wins from Vivian Ovrootsky and Lily Taylor before Guichard sealed the outcome.
With this win, UCLA improves its season record to 18-7 and will next face either Georgia or Charlotte in the super-regional round. Arizona State concludes its season at 20-6.
