No. 19 UCLA women’s volleyball started its 2025 season with a five-set win over Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California. The match ended with set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, and 15-8.
This victory marks the second consecutive season that UCLA has opened with a win and improves their record to eight wins in their last eleven season openers. It also breaks a five-match losing streak in five-set matches for the Bruins, whose last such win came against Georgia Tech at the start of the previous season.
Six players made their first appearances for UCLA: transfers Maggie Li, Marianna Singletary, Lola Schumacher, and Zayna Meyer joined freshmen Sakura Codling and Eliana Urzua on the court. Meyer had a notable performance off the bench as she recorded 38 assists and was one dig short of a double-double. She also contributed two kills and four blocks.
Cheridyn Leverette and Maggie Li each led all players with 18 kills. Leverette added ten digs for her sixth career double-double. Li finished with a team-high 19 points and two blocks.
Marianna Singletary posted twelve kills and nine blocks while hitting .423 in her first start for UCLA. Lola Schumacher led all players defensively with seventeen digs from the libero position. Brooklyn Briscoe contributed nine kills at a .467 rate along with three blocks.
UCLA dropped the first set but responded by holding Long Beach State to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set before taking control in sets three and five. The Bruins secured victory after building an early lead in the fifth set behind combined efforts from Li and Leverette.
UCLA’s next match is scheduled against Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.
