No. 4 UCLA’s women’s soccer team continued its unbeaten run, securing a 1-0 win against Maryland on Sunday. The match marked the Bruins’ eighth consecutive game without a loss.
Sophomore forward Bella Winn scored the only goal of the match on her 20th birthday. She converted a throw-in from Val Vargas, sending a shot from the top of the box into the far corner. This goal was Winn’s fourth of the season, and she currently leads the team in both goals and game-winning goals with three.
UCLA’s defense limited Maryland to just two shots during the game, one in each half. The Terrapins’ sole shot on target came late in the second half when UCLA goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor saved Alyssa Abramson’s header following a corner kick.
Nakfoor achieved her fifth solo shutout this season, bringing her goals against average down to 0.32. The Bruins have recorded eight shutouts as a team this year and hold a team goals against average of 0.27.
UCLA took 13 shots during the match, six of which were on target. Maryland goalkeeper Faith Luckey made four saves, while her teammates added another save defensively.
With this result, UCLA improves its record to 8-2-1 overall and remains unbeaten in Big Ten play at 4-0-1. Maryland now stands at 6-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play. UCLA continues to lead the Big Ten with 13 points, ahead of Michigan State and Washington who are tied for second place with 11 points each. The Bruins will next face Washington in Seattle on Saturday, October 4 at 7 p.m. PT.
