The University of California, Los Angeles women’s rowing team won every race in a dual regatta against UC San Diego on May 2. The event took place on Ballona Creek and marked the team’s Senior Day celebration.
This competition was important as it showcased the strength of UCLA’s rowing program ahead of postseason events. Facing headwinds and a strong current, UCLA managed to prevail in each of the four scheduled races.
The day began with the third and fourth varsity eight boats racing closely, with UCLA’s third varsity eight finishing just half a second ahead of their fourth varsity crew. In the following fours race, UCLA’s first varsity four finished well ahead, beating their own second varsity four by 13 seconds. The Bruins’ third varsity four also outpaced UC San Diego’s top four-person shell by more than ten seconds. UCLA continued its winning streak as the second varsity eight secured a comfortable victory over UC San Diego. In the final race, UCLA’s first varsity eight completed the course in 6:46.49—nearly forty seconds faster than their competitors from UC San Diego.
After racing concluded, fourteen senior athletes were honored during a post-regatta ceremony: Danielle DeFrancisci, Andrea Djuric, Kaija Frassrand, Jovanna Hester, Emma Jacquay, Orla Johnson, Rachel Katz, Audrey Loeb, Kamryn Monster, Kyla Otway, Anika Roche, Roman Symanski, Faye Turcotte and manager Charley Nunley.
UCLA will next compete at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on May 16 and 17.
