No. 2 UCLA recorded two wins on the first day of the MPSF Rumble at Mapes Beach, defeating No. 16 Grand Canyon 4-1 and then No. 18 Washington 5-0.
In the opening match against Grand Canyon, Harper Cooper and Jesse Dueck secured the first point for UCLA with a straight-set win on court 4. Ensley Alden and Ava Williamson followed with a close victory on court 2, ending their match with an ace from Alden. Maggie Boyd and Sally Perez clinched the overall win for UCLA on court 1. On court 5, Mallory LaBreche and Adelina Okazaki won in three sets, while Grand Canyon earned its only point after Katie Keefe and Sarah Edler defeated Cassie Dodd and Alexa Fernandez.
Against Washington, Dodd and Dueck began UCLA’s sweep by winning in three sets on court 4. Alden and Williamson also prevailed in a three-set contest on court 2. Kenzie Brower and Taylor Ford delivered a dominant performance on court 5, while Kaley Mathews teamed up with Cooper to win decisively on court 3. Boyd and Perez completed the Bruins’ sweep by overcoming Katarina Pantovic and Emma Hohenauer in three sets.
The Bruins are scheduled to continue play at the MPSF Midseason Rumble Saturday with matches against Oregon at 1 p.m. PT and top-ranked Stanford at 3 p.m. PT.
