The UCLA Swimming and Diving team secured a victory over Nevada during senior day at the Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday. The Bruins won 10 events throughout the meet.
Prior to competition, UCLA recognized its 10 senior student-athletes in a ceremony. The team then began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, where Claudia Yovanovich, Sarah Bennetts, Fay Lustria, and Jada Duncan finished first with a time of 1:36.47.
Freshman Applejean Gwinn achieved the team’s first individual win in the 1650 freestyle event, clocking in at 16:53.67. Senior Beril Bocekler followed closely for second place with a time of 16:58.38.
In the 200 freestyle, senior Gizem Guvenc won with a time of 1:46.33. Yovanovich added another win for UCLA by taking first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.35.
Senior Rosie Murphy earned another victory for the Bruins in the 200 individual medley by finishing in 1:56.22, making her the only swimmer to finish under two minutes in that event.
Lustria led a sweep for UCLA in the 100 butterfly, finishing first with teammates Jose Arbuckle and Alexis Schaffer following behind. Lustria’s winning time was 53.65 seconds.
Jada Duncan captured her fourth event win of the weekend by touching first in the 100 freestyle at 48.56 seconds; Guvenc finished second at 49.10 seconds.
Gwinn collected her second win of the day in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.31, while Bellio placed third at 4:52.57.
Sarah Bennetts provided UCLA’s final individual event win by finishing first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.47; Nikoline Biltoft-Jensen came second at 1:01.32.
The Bruins closed out their performance by winning the final event—the 200 freestyle relay—with a time of 1:29.86, marking their tenth victory of the day.
UCLA will next compete at the Big Ten Championships from February 18-21 at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota; live streaming will be available on B1G+.
