The UCLA swim and dive team competed against third-ranked Stanford at the Spieker Aquatics Center on Friday, ending the dual meet with a 156-78 loss.
Despite the defeat, several UCLA athletes delivered notable performances. Claudia Yovanovich, Jada Duncan, and Rosie Murphy were among the standouts for the Bruins.
UCLA started strong in the 400 medley relay, securing second place with a time of 3:35.04. Yovanovich led off the relay by setting a new facility record in the 100 backstroke with a split of 51.67 seconds.
In individual events, Duncan finished second in the 50 freestyle at 22.09 seconds while Yovanovich took third with a time of 22.61 seconds. Murphy secured UCLA’s first individual win of the day in the 400 individual medley, finishing in 4:06.83—more than a second ahead of her closest competitor.
Duncan also set a new school record in the 100 butterfly, placing second with a time of 51.06 seconds. Yovanovich continued her successful meet by winning the 100 backstroke event in 52.17 seconds.
Other top finishes included Gizem Guvenc’s second place in the 100 freestyle (49.28), Applejean Gwinn’s runner-up result in the 500 freestyle (4:49.01), and additional second-place showings from Murphy in the 100 IM and Sarah Bennetts in the 100 breaststroke.
The Bruins concluded Friday’s meet with another second-place finish as Duncan, Anna Wetteland, Guvenc, and Alexis Schaffer combined for a time of 3:16.36 in the 400 freestyle relay.
UCLA is scheduled to return to action at home on Saturday, January 17, facing seventh-ranked Cal at 11:00 am Pacific Time.
