UCLA splits matches at Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic in Honolulu

Top-ranked UCLA’s women’s beach volleyball team split its matches for the second consecutive day at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic, held at Queen’s Beach in Honolulu. The Bruins opened Friday with a 4-1 victory over No. 7 LMU before falling to No. 2 Stanford, 3-2, later in the afternoon.

Against LMU, UCLA secured the first four points. Ava Williamson and Harper Cooper won their third straight match on court 4, defeating Ingrid Timon-Johnson and Liv Johnson 21-13, 21-12. Taylor Ford and Mallory LaBreche played together for the first time and earned a win on court 5 against Ellie Davis and Katie McAlister, 21-18, 21-19. Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden clinched the dual on court 3 with a straight-set victory over Chloe Hooker and Josefine Schaelkel (21-18, 21-15). On court 1, Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd maintained their undefeated record by beating Tanon Rosenthal and Anna Pelloia (22-20, 21-17). Alexa Fernandez and Cassie Dodd pushed their match to three sets but lost to Magdalena Rabistch and Ines Piret (16-21, 21-18, 9-15).

In the match against Stanford, UCLA took an early lead when Mathews and Alden claimed their third win of the year on court 3 by defeating Indigo Clarke and Clara Stowell (21-15, 21-15). Stanford responded by winning on courts 5 and 2: Elena Fisher/Chloe Hoffman beat LaBreche/Adelina Okazaki (21-17, 21-15), while Avery Jackson/Brooke Rockwell overcame Fernandez/Dodd (21-19, 22-20). On court 1, Perez/Boyd forced a third set but were edged out by Kelly Belardi/Ruby Sorra (21-16, 20-22, 15-13), which clinched the win for Stanford. Williamson/Cooper finished with a three-set victory over Charlotta Bell/Logan Tusher (21-15, 11-21, 15-12) to remain unbeaten this season.

The Bruins will conclude tournament play Saturday with matches against California at approximately noon local time followed by USC in the afternoon.
