UCLA sets two relay records but falls to USC in dual swim meet

The UCLA women’s swimming and diving team broke two school relay records during a dual meet against USC at the Spieker Aquatics Center on Friday. Despite these achievements, UCLA lost to USC with a final score of 174-126.

The Bruins started the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. The team of Fay Lustria, Sarah Bennetts, Jada Duncan, and Claudia Yovanovich set a new school record in this event with a time of 1:35.15.

In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Applejean Gwinn finished second with a time of 9:50.72.

UCLA swept the top three spots in the 100 backstroke. Claudia Yovanovich finished first in 52.28 seconds, followed by Fay Lustria in second (52.43) and Rosie Murphy in third (52.83).

Freshman Jada Duncan won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.98 seconds, while Alexis Schaffer took third place at 22.68 seconds.

Rosie Murphy earned her first win of the day in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 1:51.84 and leading by nearly four seconds.

Duncan added another victory for UCLA in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.91 seconds; Lustria placed third at 53.63 seconds.

Murphy later finished second in the final individual event, the 200 IM, touching at 1:55.89.

To close out the meet, UCLA’s team of Gizem Guvenc, Yovanovich, Schaffer, and Duncan set another school record in the 400 free relay with a winning time of 3:13.56.

UCLA will next compete against Nevada on Saturday for senior day at Spieker Aquatics Center starting at 11 am PT.
