Two UCLA women’s volleyball players received Big Ten weekly honors after the team’s strong start to conference play. Libero Lola Schumacher was named Defensive Player of the Week for her performance anchoring the back row, with 21 digs in the opener and a career-best 24 digs against No. 15 Penn State. She averaged 5.00 digs per set over the weekend.
Freshman outside hitter Eliana Urzua was recognized as Freshman of the Week. In her first Big Ten matches, Urzua led UCLA with 20 kills at a .381 hitting percentage in the opener and contributed five digs and two blocks for a total of 21 points. Against Penn State, she recorded 16 kills and secured her first career double-double with 14 digs, ending the match with a decisive tip. Over both matches, Urzua tallied a team-high 36 kills, averaging four per set on a .313 hitting percentage.
These are the first Big Ten women’s volleyball weekly awards in UCLA program history and mark each player’s first time receiving such honors.
UCLA will return to Westwood for its home debut in the conference season, hosting No. 10 Purdue on October 2 and Indiana on October 4 at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
