UCLA senior defender Jennie Immethun has been recognized as the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following her debut performance for the Bruins against Georgia. Immethun, a transfer from TCU, played at center back and contributed to UCLA’s 1-0 shutout victory in the season opener.
During the match, Immethun prevented a potential tying goal in the final minute by blocking a close-range shot from Georgia’s Cate Hardin. Teammate Meila Brewer cleared the ball after Immethun’s intervention. Earlier in the game, she stopped another scoring opportunity with a tackle in the 36th minute. The UCLA defense limited Georgia to three shots on goal and secured its first shutout of the season.
This marks Immethun’s first career Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor. She was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
UCLA is scheduled to host Tennessee on Wednesday, August 20 at Wallis Annenberg Stadium for its home opener. The match will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.
Other Big Ten weekly award recipients include Gabrielle Prych (Michigan) as Offensive Player of the Week, Nyamma Nelson (Northwestern) as Goalkeeper of the Week, and Liana Tarasco (Iowa) as Freshman of the Week.
