The UCLA track and field teams split their annual dual meet with USC on May 3 at Allyson Felix Field in downtown Los Angeles. The Bruins’ men’s team secured a victory with a score of 87-76, while the women’s team was defeated by USC, finishing 94-69.
This marks the second consecutive year that the UCLA men have won the dual meet, which had not happened since the 2016-17 seasons. Last year, both UCLA teams swept the event at Drake Stadium for their first sweep since 2013.
Both the men’s and women’s squads achieved nine event wins each during this year’s competition. These victories included sweeps in events such as the 3000 meters, steeplechase, hurdles, and long jump. Each of these wins came from different athletes across both teams. Aaron Cantu and Terrence Sweetman led UCLA’s men with seven individual points each; Cantu won the steeplechase and placed third in two other events while Sweetman claimed victory in triple jump and contributed points in high jump and pole vault.
On Sunday, UCLA clinched its men’s win with a dominant performance in the final non-relay race—the men’s 3000 meters—where they finished first through third led by Henry Coughlan’s time of 8:34.91. The meet was held over two days; hammer throw and discus took place off-site on Saturday afternoon in Wilmington while all other events were contested Sunday at USC’s campus.
For many Bruins athletes this was their last full-team competition of the regular season. Select members will compete next week at Azusa Pacific University’s Last Chance Meet on May 6-7 before championship season begins at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships scheduled for May 15-17.
