The UCLA men’s tennis team, ranked No. 21 nationally, defeated No. 51 Oregon by a score of 4-2 on April 17 at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Oregon. The Bruins secured the win with singles victories from Cassius Chinlund and Rudy Quan, overcoming an early deficit against the Ducks.
This result is significant as it improves UCLA’s record to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in Big Ten play. The match was closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads before UCLA ultimately prevailed.
In doubles play, Emon van Loben Sels and Gianluca Ballotta gave UCLA an early advantage by defeating Cameron Burton and Sam Olszakowski on Court 3. However, Oregon responded with wins on Courts 1 and 2 to take the doubles point. In singles competition, Andy Nguyen brought UCLA level with a straight-set win over Lachlan Robertson on Court 4. Oregon briefly regained the lead when Cameron Burton defeated Bengt Reinhard on Court 6.
Emon van Loben Sels then tied up the match again for UCLA by defeating Pierre Mouesca on Court 2. Cassius Chinlund put the Bruins ahead for the first time after beating Declan Galligan on Court 5 for his team-high fifteenth dual singles victory of the season. Moments later, Rudy Quan clinched the overall win for UCLA by overcoming Vlad Breazu in straight sets at No.1 singles.
According to official results provided by both programs following Friday’s contest, Quan has now clinched three team wins for UCLA this season while van Loben Sels improved his dual play record to fourteen wins against just two losses.
UCLA will conclude its regular season schedule Sunday at Washington’s Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
