UCLA men’s tennis sends nine players to ITA Southwest Regional Championships

The UCLA men’s tennis team is set to compete in the ITA Division I Men’s Southwest Regional Championships, which start Thursday at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The Bruins will have nine players participating in the event.

Andrei Crabel and Bengt Reinhard are scheduled to begin play in the singles qualifying rounds on Thursday. The main draw for singles starts Friday and will feature Gianluca Ballotta, Spencer Johnson, Andy Nguyen, Rudy Quan, Aadarsh Tripathi, and Emon van Loben Sels representing UCLA.

In doubles competition, four pairs from UCLA are entered. On Friday, Ballotta/Reinhard, Johnson/van Loben Sels, Crabel/Leo von Bismarck, and Quan/Tripathi will all open their campaigns. Some teams received byes in the first round of doubles play.

The event structure allows for the two singles finalists from each region to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament in November. In addition, each region’s doubles champion will secure a place in the NCAA doubles draw.
