UCLA men’s tennis opens Big Ten play with road sweep over Purdue

The UCLA men’s tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Purdue at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday. This win completes a two-match road sweep as UCLA begins its Big Ten Conference play.

UCLA clinched the match after earning four points. Aadarsh Tripathi delivered the decisive fourth point for the Bruins. Other singles winners included Cassius Chinlund, Andy Nguyen, Rudy Quan, and Emon van Loben Sels. Both Quan and van Loben Sels recorded wins in both singles and doubles competition. With his doubles win, van Loben Sels reached 100 career victories across singles and doubles matches.

For Purdue, Nour Fathalla was victorious in his singles match.

In doubles play, UCLA took an early lead when Rudy Quan and Bengt Reinhard defeated Jacob Lee and Juan David Velasquez 6-0 on Court 3. Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels followed with a 6-4 win against Nikola Jovic and Maj Premzl to secure the first point for UCLA.

During singles competition, UCLA captured four of the first sets. Emon van Loben Sels won against Stefan Simeunovic 6-2, 6-2 on Court 3. Andy Nguyen beat Maj Premzl 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4.

Tripathi came from behind in his second set against Velasquez on Court 5 but ultimately prevailed with a score of 6-4, 7-6(6).

Rudy Quan continued his strong season by defeating Henrik Villanger in straight sets (7-6(6), 6-3). This marks Quan’s seventh consecutive singles victory; he is now 8-1 in dual matches this season.

Purdue scored its lone point when Fathalla defeated Spencer Johnson on Court 1 with scores of 7-6(6), 2-6, and 6-3. Cassius Chinlund completed the day by rallying to defeat Jacob Lee on Court 6 (2-6, 7-6(2), 7-5).

UCLA will next face USC at Los Angeles Tennis Center this Friday at 3 p.m. PT as Big Ten play continues.
