The UCLA men’s soccer team was defeated 1-0 by California in its home opener at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Sunday night. The deciding goal came late in the match, with Luka Lukic scoring for the Golden Bears at the 89:42 mark off a corner kick.
UCLA freshman Ryan Tiltack made his first appearance as starting goalkeeper. Tiltack, from Toronto, Canada, made several key saves to keep the score even until the final minute. In the opening half, UCLA had chances to take the lead, including an early shot by Tamir Ratoviz that required a save from Cal’s Connor Lambe and another attempt by Sergi Solans Ormo that went just wide.
Both teams entered halftime without a goal. In the second half, Tiltack continued to make important stops, including a reflex save in the 75th minute and another diving effort in the 85th minute to keep UCLA level.
Despite these efforts, California scored in the closing moments to secure the win. The game also marked the 40th anniversary of UCLA’s 1985 National Championship team, which was recognized during Sunday’s match.
UCLA will next play against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm PT and will be broadcast on B1G+.
