The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has established the Advisory Committee on AI in Teaching and Learning to address the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in education. Formed in spring 2025, this committee will monitor and evaluate changes AI brings to UCLA’s educational environment.

A recent survey revealed that 66% of UCLA students used generative AI tools during the academic year for tasks such as brainstorming writing projects, researching topics, or studying for exams. In response, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning Erin Sanders O’Leary initiated the committee to support educational innovation and responsible adoption of academic technology.

O’Leary stated, “Providing research-informed guidance around how to leverage emerging technologies like AI is a major priority.” The committee will guide instructors on using AI technology while developing resources through UCLA’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Darnell Hunt emphasized the importance of unified efforts across campus: “Entities across campus are pursuing their own paths, but we all have to come together.”

The committee includes representatives from various departments including Academic Senate, DataX Initiative, Digital and Technology Solutions (DTS), Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Affairs, UCLA Library, and UCLA Extension. Co-chaired by Chris Mattmann from DTS and Kem Saichaie from TLC, it aims to explore AI’s role within higher education.

Committee member Alex Bui highlighted the need for integration across pedagogical methods. Daniel Scott Snelson from English and design media arts noted the opportunity to reinvent traditional pedagogy models. Elisa Kreiss from Communication emphasized rethinking learning evaluation processes.

Further information about generative AI tools available at UCLA can be accessed through the AI Innovation Initiative or TLC’s guide.
