The UCLA Film & Television Archive is set to present a diverse lineup of screenings and events this spring, featuring both classic and contemporary works. The season will include tributes, international cinema, family films, and in-person Q&A sessions.
The program begins on April 4 with a tribute to the late filmmaker David Lynch. This event will feature a screening of his surrealist sitcom “On The Air” (1992), with series co-creator Mark Frost attending in person.
Another highlight is the Archive Talks series on April 5, where retired Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan will introduce his new book and participate in a discussion with The New Yorker film critic Justin Chang after the screening of “Bombshell,” starring Jean Harlow.
The “Beyond Barbie” series aims to redefine girlhood narratives through cinema by showcasing filmmakers from around the world who challenge conventional coming-of-age stories. This series includes an in-person Q&A session with director Anna Rose Holmer and editor Saela Davis on April 6.
Director May Hong HaDuong remarked, “As the Archive commemorates six decades of film preservation and public engagement, this spring season is a testament to its lasting mission — to honor the past, embrace the present and pave the way for the future of cinema.”
Other notable events include screenings of restored animated shorts from the 1920s to 1940s on April 11 and a celebration of Malcolm X’s legacy from May 2-8. The season also features special programs such as “Food and Film” with chef Alice Waters on May 9 and screenings dedicated to African diasporic filmmaker Sarah Maldoror on May 10.
In addition, there will be a celebration of Ivan Dixon’s work from May 30-June 1, featuring restored films and television programs he was involved in. The UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema will take place from June 14-29.
Screenings are held at the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum, with free admission available through June 2026 thanks to an anonymous donor. For more information about schedules and guest speakers, visit cinema.ucla.edu.
