The UCLA baseball team, ranked No. 1, defeated Maryland 8-3 on March 21 at Jackie Robinson Stadium to clinch a series victory.
This win extends the Bruins’ record to 20-2 overall and keeps them undefeated in Big Ten conference play at 8-0, marking their best conference start in program history. The team’s current winning streak stands at 14 games.
Payton Brennan led the offense with a three-run home run in the first inning, helping UCLA collect ten hits during the game. Eight of nine starters reached base, with Dean West, Mulivai Levu, and Roman Martin each recording two hits. Cashel Dugger and Dominic Cadiz also contributed hits.
Pitcher Wylan Moss earned his second win of the season by delivering 3.2 scoreless innings in relief and lowering his earned run average to 0.40 over 22.1 innings pitched this year. Easton Hawk closed out the game by striking out two batters for his second save of the campaign.
Maryland took an early lead with a two-out RBI double from Rylen Stockton in the first inning, but UCLA responded quickly with four runs in their half of the inning. The Terrapins added single runs in the second and fourth innings but were unable to overcome UCLA’s consistent scoring and defensive plays, including a key relay throw that prevented a run in the third inning.
The Bruins will conclude their series against Maryland tomorrow at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
