The UCLA baseball team lost to Oregon, 9–6, at Jackie Robinson Stadium on May 9. The Bruins, ranked No. 1 and holding a record of 45-5 overall and 25-1 in the Big Ten Conference, saw their undefeated run in league play come to an end against the No. 13 Ducks.
This game was significant because it marked UCLA’s first loss in conference play this season and ended a stretch where the team matched the Big Ten record with 27 consecutive league wins. That streak tied Illinois’ mark set in 1911.
UCLA started strong with a four-run first inning, highlighted by Roch Cholowsky’s home run and three consecutive RBI hits from Payton Brennan, Will Gasparino, and Cashel Dugger. However, Oregon quickly responded with four runs of their own in the second inning thanks to a three-run homer by Naulivou Lauaki.
The teams traded leads throughout the game. Gasparino hit his nineteenth home run of the season for UCLA in the third inning before Oregon tied it again in the seventh using walks and a balk rather than hits. Cholowsky hit his second home run of the night—his twentieth this year—to briefly put UCLA back ahead before Oregon rallied for four runs with two outs in the eighth inning. Jack Brooks’ bases-clearing double gave Oregon its final margin.
On pitching duty for UCLA, Ian May stood out by throwing nearly two scoreless innings and striking out three batters.
Looking ahead, UCLA will face Oregon again at Jackie Robinson Stadium for senior day at noon Pacific Time.
