The University of California, Los Angeles baseball team secured a 7-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton on April 7 at Goodwin Field. Junior shortstop Roch Cholowsky led the Bruins with two home runs and three runs batted in, celebrating his 21st birthday with a standout performance.
The win marks UCLA’s (30-2, 15-0 Big Ten) achievement as the first Division I team to reach 30 wins this season and extends their program-record winning streak to 24 games. The game highlights both individual and team accomplishments as the Bruins continue their strong run in collegiate baseball.
Cholowsky went three-for-five at the plate, tying Will Gasparino for the team lead in home runs at thirteen. Trey Gudoy contributed three hits while Dean West added two more. The UCLA lineup combined for thirteen hits overall. Mulivai Levu, Roman Martin, Payton Brennan, Aiden Aguayo, and Kasen Khansarinia each had one hit.
UCLA’s bullpen was effective throughout the final six innings of play by holding Cal State Fullerton scoreless during that stretch. Jake Swenson earned his first Division I win by pitching one and one-third scoreless innings with three strikeouts. CJ Bott, Cal Randall, Jack O’Connor, and Justin Lee each pitched shutout frames to help secure the result.
After taking an early lead with Cholowsky’s solo home run in the first inning and another run in the second due to a throwing error by Fullerton’s defense, UCLA allowed three runs in the third but responded with a three-run fourth inning featuring key hits from Brennan, Gudoy, Khansarinia and West. Cholowsky’s second homer—a two-run shot—extended UCLA’s advantage late in the game before Lee closed out with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.
Looking ahead, UCLA will travel east for a three-game series against Rutgers beginning Friday.
