Chon Noriega named interim dean at UCLA School of Theater Film & Television

Chon Noriega has been appointed interim dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Currently a distinguished professor in the department of film, television, and digital media at the school, Noriega will begin his role on February 1st and serve until June 30th or until a permanent dean is appointed.

Noriega succeeds Brian Kite, who will assume his new position as dean and vice provost of graduate education next month. Noriega has been part of the school's faculty since 1992 and formerly served as director of UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center. His expertise lies in Chicano and Latino arts, artists, and media, with research focusing on their aesthetic, social, and institutional histories.

In addition to his academic work, Noriega has archived and preserved works by filmmakers, artists, and community-based arts institutions. He has curated projects focused on Chicano painting, graphics, and other visual arts. ARTnews magazine recognized him as one of the curators “shaping the way art is presented around the globe.”

During his 19 years leading the Chicano Studies Research Center (2002–21), Noriega expanded its archival holdings related to Chicano and Latino communities significantly. He organized public programs that reached over 800,000 people through exhibitions at notable venues such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Autry Museum of the American West.

The center's press published more than 30 scholarly books under his leadership that received over 63 international awards. Noriega advanced various multiyear research projects on topics like archival preservation and access, arts and culture, economy, education equity for LGBTQ individuals along with gender equity issues immigration rights public health urban poverty.

Moreover he established four endowed funds at center oversaw development collaborative projects involving over 150 community organizations public institutions colleges

As a co-founder National Association Latino Independent Producers Noriega worked actively facilitating access underrepresented groups working media arts In 2013 helped establish national undergraduate mentorship program diversify curatorial ranks six comprehensive art museums
