Brian Kite has been appointed as UCLA's new dean and vice provost of graduate education. He is set to assume his new responsibilities by February 1, 2025. Kite currently serves as the dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) and has been a professor of directing at UCLA since 2015.
During his time at TFT, Kite played a significant role in navigating the school through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He led a strategic planning process, upgraded administrative systems, and spearheaded development efforts that resulted in substantial funding for infrastructure improvements and support for students and faculty.
Kite also worked closely with various stakeholders to innovate the school's curriculum and strengthen its connections with the entertainment industry and other campus units. Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt expressed confidence in Kite's leadership abilities, stating, "I am confident that Brian will provide outstanding leadership as dean and vice provost and will positively impact and advance graduate education at UCLA."
Before joining UCLA, Kite was the producing artistic director of La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. His work there included numerous acclaimed productions. He received recognition such as the Joel Hirschhorn Award from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and an Ovation Award for Best Direction. Notably, he directed the first American play performed at China's National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
At UCLA, Kite has been involved in several committees including the Chancellor’s Council on the Arts and various other initiatives related to graduate education policies. Commenting on his appointment, Kite stated: “Graduate education at UCLA is rooted in a tradition of excellence and innovation, and I am thrilled to contribute to that legacy.”
Kite will take over from Susan Ettner, who has held the position since July 2021 after serving as interim dean for a year.
