As Native American Heritage Month concludes, the "PST ART: Art & Science Collide" event at UCLA showcases Indigenous perspectives. The Hammer Museum features Cannupa Hanska Luger's large-scale work "Sovereign," part of the exhibition “Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice,” open until January 5.
Cree/Metis filmmaker Danis Goulet presented her film “Night Raiders” at UCLA, part of the screening series “Science Fiction Against the Margins” running through December 14 at the Billy Wilder Theater. Her film places Cree people in a dystopian future, highlighting their resilience despite historical erasure attempts.
The Fowler Museum hosts two exhibitions emphasizing Indigenous knowledge on craftmaking and land management. “Sangre de Nopal/Blood of the Nopal: Tanya Aguiñiga & Porfirio Gutiérrez” is available until January 12, when “Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art” will open. This exhibition promotes traditional fire practices as essential for land stewardship and tribal sovereignty.
UCLA alumni contribute to PST ART with works exploring Indigenous cosmology, merging traditional art forms with technology, and offering new views on ceremonial practices.
More information about these projects can be found on the UCLA GoArts website.
