Patent office takes 1,793 days to approve Santa Monica inventor’s patent in December

Patent 14

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in December in Santa Monica was 1,793 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Snap, Inc. for a system and method for generating and displaying avatars. It was filed on Jan. 9, 2017 before being approved on Dec. 7, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship, said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were 35 patents granted for Santa Monica inventors in December.
