California State Assembly District 16 issued the following announcement on Feb. 19.
Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), released the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s plan to solve the state’s housing and homelessness crisis:
“I applaud the Governor’s commitment to aggressively confront our homelessness and housing crisis. Housing affordability is the most challenging public policy issue affecting our state today. Every day, more people find themselves homeless. Our failure to act immediately has had dire impacts on the quality of life for those affected and on our economy. The Governor’s initiative announced today builds upon many of my previous legislative efforts to increase funding and update and streamline local planning, so that housing and services for our most vulnerable populations can be built more quickly, implemented expeditiously and more affordably. I look forward to working with the Governor to bring this plan to fruition.”
Assemblymember Bloom has been heavily involved in legislative solutions to end the housing affordability and homelessness crisis. Since 2016, he has introduced landmark legislation to expedite ADU’s or “Granny Flat” production, streamline the state’s density bonus program, increase tenant protections, reform the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) process to hold more cities accountable, and has pushed for more statewide funding for both housing and homelessness.
“I am encouraged by the Governor’s battle cry for increased housing production and my bill package this year will reflect the need for more statewide production of affordable housing and funding. In addition, I look forward to working with the Governor on AB 1279 – which increases housing production by taking a responsible, regional approach to building more affordable housing in those areas that are in dire need of more affordable multifamily housing.”
