California State Assembly District 54 recently issued the following announcement.
47th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Assemblymember Kamlager (D-Los Angeles) introduced legislation to remove a significant barrier to abortion access – cost. AB 1973, the Abortion Affordability Act, eliminates insurance copays and deductibles for abortion services.
Abortion foes in state legislatures across the country are emboldened and have been approving bans or serious restrictions on abortion. Assemblymember Kamlager is committed to fighting back against the pernicious attacks upon sexual and reproductive health care.
“Copays and deductibles for abortion can be cost-prohibitive and inconsistent. Some plans have a $40 copay, but others can charge thousands of dollars,” said Kamlager. “Barriers to abortion disproportionately affect people of color, young people and poor women, creating systemic health care disparities. We must work to ensure access to abortion does not depend on an individual’s status, privilege or bank account.”
Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) is sponsoring the legislation. Black Women for Wellness Action Project, National Health Law Program, NARAL Pro-Choice California, Essential Access Health and ACT for Women and Girls have signed on as co-sponsors.
“Even though California has taken great strides to expand, not ban, access to sexual and reproductive health care, we as a state still have an opportunity, and an obligation, to stand strong and be bold in supporting access to the full scope of sexual and reproductive health care,” said Jodi Hicks, President/ CEO of PPAC.
