Spencer Johnson, a junior on the UCLA men’s tennis team, has been named Big Ten Player of the Week. The announcement was made Wednesday by the conference office.
Johnson achieved this recognition after an undefeated performance in both singles and doubles at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Tempe, Arizona. His results secured him a spot in the NCAA singles tournament for a second time and a debut in the doubles tournament.
During the event, Johnson won five singles matches over four days. He recorded victories over two ranked opponents: No. 89 Alexander Rozin of Arizona in a three-set quarterfinal and No. 124 Shu Matsuoka of Arizona State in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline. The singles final was set to be an all-Bruin matchup but was not played.
In doubles play, Johnson partnered with Emon van Loben Sels. The pair won five matches and clinched the title with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Pepperdine’s David Fix and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida.
This is Johnson’s second career Big Ten weekly honor and marks UCLA’s first such award for men’s tennis in the 2025-26 season. Last year, which was UCLA’s first as a Big Ten member, the team earned seven weekly conference awards.
The list of Big Ten men’s tennis Players of the Week for the current season includes athletes from Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, and now UCLA.
