The city of Santa Monica is gearing up to discuss proposed service changes to the Big Blue Bus over the next five years. An initiative known as Brighter Blue aims to address evolving rider needs and travel behavior post-pandemic, with a focus on sustainability and connectivity within the community.

Director of Transportation Anuj Gupta highlighted the importance of community input in shaping the future of Big Blue Bus services, stating, “We are advancing our engagement process to ensure that future Big Blue Bus service aligns with community needs, promotes greater access to high-quality bus and rail service in our region and attracts new riders to our system.”

To gather feedback, two public hearings have been scheduled. The first will be an online session on Tuesday, April 16 from 6-8 p.m., while the second will be an in-person meeting on Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Park, Thelma Terry Building.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the hearings either in person or online. Those unable to attend can also provide feedback via an online survey or submit written comments by mail or email.

The proposed enhancements include increasing frequency on key routes, expanding service hours to allow for all-day travel on weekdays and weekends, introducing weekend service on select weekday-only routes, and ensuring direct access to current and planned Metro Rail stations.

Written comments will be accepted between April 15 and May 24, 2024, with the Big Blue Bus team committed to reviewing all feedback received and making adjustments to the proposed service changes as needed.

For those attending the in-person hearing, accommodations such as ADA accessibility and translation services will be provided. Additionally, parking is available for those who choose to drive to the event.

Overall, the public hearings present an opportunity for community members to have their voices heard and shape the future of transportation services in Santa Monica.
