In a recent development, the California League of Cities recognized Santa Monica's efforts in enhancing transportation infrastructure. The city's Safe Streets for 17th Street and Michigan Avenue Project was acknowledged as a winner of one of the 2024 Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), between 2015 and 2019, a concerning statistic revealed that 65 percent of all crashes in Santa Monica involved pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders. In response, the DOT has initiated 18 pedestrian and bicycle safety improvement projects aimed at making the city safer for all residents and visitors.

One of the key aspects of these projects is the focus on sustainability. With transportation accounting for a significant portion of Santa Monica's greenhouse gas emissions, the DOT's goal is to convert 50 percent of local trips to active modes such as walking or cycling. These initiatives align with the City Council's priority of a Clean & Safe Santa Monica and a Sustainable & Connected community.

Several safety enhancement projects have already been completed, including the Safe Streets for 17th Street and Michigan Avenue, Ocean Avenue protected bikeway, Wilshire Boulevard safety enhancements (Phase 1), 4th Street pedestrian safety improvements, and the "MANGO" 20th Street pedestrian and bike connection.

Looking ahead, the Mobility Division is focused on continuing funded projects, identifying funding sources for future initiatives, preparing grant applications, and engaging with the community to educate and promote progress.

Furthermore, the DOT's efforts extend beyond transportation, with a commitment to promoting justice, equity, and diversity. By ensuring that transit options are accessible to all, regardless of income or ability, Santa Monica is working towards building a comprehensive, inclusive transportation network.

Additionally, the city recognizes the importance of infrastructure in supporting economic growth and cultural vitality. As new developments shape the landscape of Santa Monica, close coordination between city departments and the community is crucial to meet the evolving needs of all users.

Santa Monica's dedication to a sustainable, connected, and safe transportation network underscores its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community for all.
