Santa Monica Public Library has named Anne Carmack as the City of Santa Monica's first Poet Laureate. Carmack, a Santa Monica-based writer and multidisciplinary artist, is known for her work that delves into themes of personal narrative, identity, philosophy, and spirituality through various mediums such as poetry, painting, photography, filmmaking, and storytelling.

Mayor Phil Brock expressed his excitement, stating, “We are a place full of vibrant arts and culture and I am thrilled to see Santa Monica have its own poet laureate." He looks forward to the upcoming community events celebrating National Poetry Month and Arts Month, as well as the contributions Carmack will bring to the city.

Library Director Erica Cuyugan also shared her enthusiasm, saying, “We are excited to have Anne Carmack as the City’s first ever Poet Laureate. As a long-time resident and dedicated poet/artist, Anne embodies the spirit and the soul of Santa Monica through her words and her art."

Carmack's term as Poet Laureate began on March 21, 2024, and she will be actively involved in various community events throughout April. The public will have the opportunity to engage with the Poet Laureate at events such as a poetry workshop and a welcoming reception at the Main Library, as well as the Arts & Literacy Festival at Virginia Avenue Park, where they can contribute to an original poem by Carmack in honor of the Pico Branch Library’s 10th Anniversary.

The City of Santa Monica's Poet Laureate Program aims to showcase the city through literary arts, support the creation of works that celebrate its diversity and vibrancy, and promote arts education. All programs and events are free and open to the public, with more information available on smpl.org.
